Edgewood

Edgewood was an early settlement by Native American tribes (Susquehannock), followed by European communities that established farms in the 17th and 18th centuries. Agriculture was prevalent through the 1800’s with small villages developing near rail lines. In 1917 there was a major turning point when the U.S. Army established Edgewood Arsenal as part of Aberdeen Proving Ground, making the area the nation’s primary center for chemical research during World Wars I and II. Following World War II, Edgewood experienced rapid residential growth as housing developments replaced former military and agricultural properties, shaping the modern suburban community seen today. Edgewood is a historically significant community offering affordable housing, waterfront recreation, diverse dining, and strong transportation access. Its roots in national military history, combined with modern neighborhoods and communitydriven programs, make Edgewood an important and evolving part of Harford County.
